Visually extremely expressive social critical melodrama about the – ultimately unsuccessful – struggles of a prostitute to break out of her situation. In an effort to ensure a better future for her offspring, she is prepared to pay any price so he can attend school, but she comes up against rejection time after time: both child and mother are shunned by the community. The elderly director of the school is the only one prepared to stand with her on the principle that this is the true objective of education, but here too the social committee comes out on top. The amazingly expressive features of the protagonist – together with the exaggeration typical of acting from the period – still tug at the heartstrings of audiences today, while the child actor playing the little boy is remarkable for his total lack of artificiality. The scene depicting the school festival rockets right off the cuteness chart.
