One of the gems of classic Mandarin music movies, it is an adaptation of Bizet’s Carmen relocated to Hong Kong. The role of femme fatale is played by Grace Chang, the number one Hong Kong vocalist star of the 1950s. The naive victim of seduction is the shabby music teacher who takes a job as pianist in a nightclub where the demonic Wild Rose sings. One lesson learnt from the dramatic story with tragic end is that quite often, the person who appears evil actually has a heart of gold, but fate is equally cruel to all. With her productions running from The Marriage of Figaro to Rigoletto and flamboyant flamenco performances, Grace Chang remains a stunning artist to this day.
