A story from the Socialist bloc woven through with wonderful symbolism and serious moralistic philosophy. It became an instant cult movie from the moment it was released. It is spring 1945 and all of Poland is celebrating the newly-won victory, all apart from two young fighters with the national resistance who are planning to assassinate party secretary Szczuka. Although their plan goes awry the first time, they get a second opportunity. At this very moment, however, a woman appears who throws everything into confusion. The final piece in the Wajda war trilogy not only looks back into the past but it also teaches its audience how to read between the lines in the next political era. The movie’s success rests largely on Cybulski’s legendary acting, his anachronistic jeans and, of course, those inimitable sunglasses…
