Throughout his reign, King Youngjo was constantly plagued by questions about his legitimacy as his mother was a lowborn concubine, and because he ascended to the throne after the sudden death of his half-brother King Kyoungjong. In order to overcome such doubts, Youngjo dedicated himself to becoming a king flawless in matters of scholarly learning and conduct. When the Crown Prince is born late in Youngjo’s life, he wishes for the prince to become a king fully recognized by everyone. However, the Crown Prince falls far short of his father’s expectations, and time and time again the king finds himself being disappointed by his son.
