Introduction: Gergő Gazdag, film handling, digitization associate, National Film Institute - Film Archive

A sport film that blends all kinds and many types of other genres into its own genre, yet still there are few dramas as strong as this. Which, for a movie about a boxer, means that the main role goes not to the fight itself, the boxing ring, but instead to the character’s, the hero’s suffering, his struggle with himself. In this Martin Scorsese film adapted from Jake LaMotta’s autobiography, the man struggling with his own demons is not simply a fallen hero but the kind of figure resembling the heroes of Greek tragedies: it is as though by trying to avoid his fate, he throws himself into the forces that are ripping his life apart. Robert de Niro’s acting makes this an important film.
